Summary
In June 1853 Captain Richard I Nelson of the Royal Engineers sent an estimate for adapting the bastion to receive new armament and side arms shed to the Inspector General of Fortifications, John Fox Burgoyne. Burgoyne ordered a 56-pdr on dwarf traversing platform from the Director General of the Royal Artillery with which to equip the emplacement at the same time. The scars of the side arm shed demolished
to make way for a machine gun battery are still visible in the revetment wall (1).
