Full description
Water supplied by the Falmouth Corporation was pumped up Castle Road by an engine housed at the junction with Castle Drive. The structure, built within a quarry, which possibly relates to the Castle Drive project, appears on plans from 1866. A second engine house, shown on the 1910 Ordnance Survey, seems to have been added to in 1901 to serve the married soldiers' quarters. The buildings subsequently fell into ruin when the pressure of the water main was sufficiently increased for water to reach the castle under its own steam. Some valvage and War Department fencing along with rubble from the ruined structures remains on the site (1).
