Full description

The place-name Pendennis, first recorded c1540 (b15) contains the elements pen, "head, end, promontory", and dynas, "fort" (b16). The name indicates the site of a promontory fort or cliff castle; the most likely location for a rampart across the headland is suggested by CAU to be towards its south-eastern tip, centred at SW 8263 3160 (b21). Pasfield Oliver, whilst attributing the first fortification of Pendennis to the Romans, notes that its use by the Vikings has been postulated (b11).
