Full description
Largin Castle is an Iron Age hillfort on the spur of a steep sided hill. It has dependent inner enclosures and two outer cross bank enclosures (6625). The enclosures are formed by a bank, ditch and counterscarp bank, of which the latter is missing on the west side of the outer enclosure. In the south of the outer rampart the remains of a club-ended or inturned entrance led to a broad shallow sunken way which extends to the simple entrance of the innerwork. Arable farming within the hillfort is possibly shown by a cross lynchet up to 1.0m high west of the trackway (h1). Although within a conifer forestry plantation, the earthwork has not been planted with foreign species, and it is in excellent condition (h2). On the north side of the interior is a possible pillow mound (6619.01). The hillfort is visible in outline under tree cover in aerial photos (p1) and this was plotted as part of the NMP.
