Full description

A lime kiln is first shown at Crab Quay on Lilly's survey of 1717 but does not appear on a plan thought to date to 1700. The Buck Brothers' engraving shows the squat drum to the south of the cove in 1734. It appears in detail in the foreground of an oblique photograph of Crab Quay Battery taken between 1854 and 1887. The District Engineer mentions in a letter of 1827 that the road, leading from Crab Quay and subsequently used for the transportation of powder, was originally built for carts transporting lime to the castle (24).

A lime kiln is shown at this location on the 1st Edition 1:2500 OS map (b21). It is depicted as a single pot kiln on an earthwork, with a small building, possibly a store or lime burner's cottage alongside it.


A site visit in February 1984 revealed that the site was "overgrown with scrub and no remains could be seen". (A Pearson, pers comm)

The kiln does not appear on plans after the 1866 Ordnance Survey and may have been demolished to provide an unobstructed field of fire for the 6pdr quick-fire guns installed in Crab Quay Battery in 1902. This date may be narrowed further, for a socket for a minefield alignment mast was concreted into the rock on the site of the lime kiln, probably when the militia first laid the minefield in 1889. A salt glazed duct and radiussed mortar cable bed, indicate the point at which an underwater cable entered the water on its journey to the jetty at St Anthony (24).
