Full description

The Tithe Award for Madron records the field-name of 'Carnegoes' for an enclosure at SW 4670 3088 (b1). Henderson noted that this area was earlier recorded as 'Kerigou' (b2), suggesting a possible round site. Crofts wrote that c1886 the sexton of the adjoining graveyard (Heamoor Cemetery, Penzance) noted disturbed ground there (b4). Haverfield, quoting information from JB Cornish (b3), recorded that "two second brass of Vespian, corroded and nearly illegible, were found in the Penzance Cemetery, 8ft (2.44m) below the ground, together with some cow bones, lying in an ancient trench" (b5). A field visit in 1975 revealed that there is a possible terrace within the cricket field (the field called 'Carnegoes') (h1). Henderson noted that the coin finds were: one of Vitellius (AD 69) and one of Severos Alexander (AD 222-235)(b2).
