Full description
The present 'Old Bridge' located in Old Bridge Street over the River Allen, is on the site of the original east bridge of Truro (18937.1), is probably C18 (b1). The bridge is of rubble stone and has two small arches (b2). There is a single parapet on the south-east side of the street where the stream emerges, to the north-west of which it is culverted for 30m (h1). The C19 St. Mary's School is partly built over the culvert (see 18938). In 1973 EH listed the structure and provided additional information that the bridge was rendered on the western side with the two elliptical arches and cutwater and lintelled openings at the other end.
The Cornish Bridge Project states:
"Well faced and roughly sorted granite parapet over granite slabs on the DS side, and dressed granite arches on the US side, these arches are seemingly made of monolithic slabs dressed as arches 2 elliptical arches and cutwater, and lintelled openings to other end. This is more of a tunnel than a bridge and has St Mary’s Sunday school 1836 built onto it." (b4)
