Full description

The West Bridge of Truro, crossing the River Kenwyn, is named in 1434 (b1). It is now covered by Victoria Place. The bridge was hump-backed; there was a ford beside it (b2). The site of the bridge in River Street was visited in 1989, in advance of upgrading of the River Kenwyn culvert at this point (h1-3). A bridge exposed by the works was recorded; it was a twin-arched concrete clad structure, 3.98m long x 3.80m wide, with assymetrical arches up to 1.47m high, and a central pier 0.69m wide. The character of this bridge was obscured by the concrete coating, but C.A.U. was informed by Mr. Stephens of County Highways that it was an 18th/19th century brick structure, replacing the earlier bridge demolished 22 years previously.
