Full description

The Medieval manor house at Carnanton had an attached chapel dedicated to St Mary, whose location is recorded on the 1st and 2nd ed OS maps (7, 8). A summary of the history of the chapel is provided by Preston-Jones (12).

It was licenced in 1331, and again in 1376 and 1387 (1-3). The chapel, along with four closes of land in the parish of Mawgan, was seized in the Chantry Act, and was recorded as in ruins in 1745 (4). The site of the Chapel was marked by a stone, although when the OS visited the site in 1969 this had been removed and the area was by then covered by a flower bed. The gardener reported that in 30 years they had never seen any cropmarks which could indicate the presence of foundations (5). A Tudor doorway and tracery incorporated into a C19 schoolhouse within the grounds of Carnanton may have originated in the chapel (6).
