Full description

On Chapel Downs, Sancreed, 0.25 miles west of Sancreed church are the remains of a chapel and well, within a modern enclosure. The chapel and well were restored in the C19 after their discovery in 1879, by the vicar of Sancreed (b2). The chapel measures 14ft by 6ft 7in (4.27m by 2.01m) internally. The walls, of crude dugstone, are up to 0.7m thick and have a maximum height of 1.2m; none of the stone is dressed. There is an entrance in the south-west corner. Lying on the ground in the entrance is a small, round headed arch with simple moulding, cut from a single stone (h1). This must be the evidence of late C15 or early C16 work, mentioned by the OS. One of the stones across the overflow channel from the well has a stopped chamfer which is probably a door jamb (h1).
The monument was included in the Schedule on 2/1/1968 and the Scheduling was affirmed on 25/11/1999.
