Full description
1> Map 1851 shows area as gardens, with 'supposed line of city wall' marked.
1889 map 1:2500 has 'the Ditch' labelled. Excavation revealed buried ground
surface of gardens with canine burial and felled tree. Wall of local
sandstone with roof tile as bonding. Medieval surface well preserved. Finds
include pottery, leather fragments, animal bones. Excavation to bottom of
ditch hindered by water seepage leading to much liquid silt which obscured
progress. Pottery finds date wall construction to late 14th century. Ditch fill
dates to early 19th century.
