Summary

During an excavation the medieval city wall was found in three separate trenches, providing evidence of a change in direction of the wall in order to meet with Gosford Gate.

Full description

1> Excavations prior to redevelopment of site to establish line of medieval city
wall to S of Gosford Street. 3 trenches dug which revealed a well preserved
section of wall; Trench 3 showing a marked change in direction. 1932 Bridge
Buildings remains of a timber framed structure were revealed in situ. These
were later removed prior to demolition of building. The timbers are thought
to date to the 16th century and are associated with 'Anchorsmith Tavern'. Dendro dating is
to be sought. Finds include pottery and animal bone.
