Full description

1> Approximately 45m of Medieval Town Wall, including defensive Mural Tower & base of a
stair at rear of wall. Excavations revealed occupation levels dating back to 1385
construction & occupation of Wall. Surviving foundations mainly complete, but
robbed deeply in few areas. On S side of wall defensive tower, 8 x 8m ext.
Foundations constructed of packed unmortared sandstone blocks in clay cut
trench, vertical sided & 1m deep. Larger blocks on outside of trench, middle
filled with rough hewn rubble blocks. On top mortar bed with upstanding wall
constructed on this. Wall section shows process of ending 1 year's building
and beginning next. Tower foundations were built stronger than other wall
sections and were able to withstand heavier structure. Internal floor level was
taken to high level, probably to seal against rising winter water ditch
levels. Tile recovered from robbing pit at rear may suggest that tower was
roofed at 2nd floor level. Foundation and robbing backfill of stairway survive.
Finds of pottery, tiles and animal bones recovered during excavation.
