Full description

1> Greyfriars Gate (site).
2> Erected 1384, demolished c1781…This was a magnificent gate, one of the two finest the city posessed. It was one of five gates demolished in the 18th century…it is recorded that in 1662 the Earl of Northampton gave orders that one Gilbert Wood should dwell in this gate 'in consequence of his services and sufferings in the late wars'. Prisoners taken in the Battle of Preston Pans were lodged here in 1648.
3> Depicted.
4> Greyfriars Gate, called Frer Gate in 1421, was licensed to be built of stone
from Cheylesmore Park in 1385, and was the main exit to Kenilworth and Warwick.
Became tenement in 1705 and was demolished in 1781. The gate had flanking
towers with conical roofs. The 2 lower storeys formed an embattled
projection into Warwick Lane, the gateway arch being surmounted by pointed
2 light windows alternating with pinnacled niches.
5> A drawing on 1731 shows hay being carted through the Grey Friars Gate to the "Bull Inn".
