Summary

Numerous enclosures and linear features in this area are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs taken between 1959 and 1999. One has been dated to the late-2nd century, although others may be of an earlier or later date. Some elements had been destroyed by a road cutting before summer 1975.

Jarvis, K., Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV23188.

One enclosure was excavated by trial trenching but revealed no interior roman features. Enclosure ditches not defensive.2nd century pot and tile. Cropmark photo shows another enclosure to south of that excavated. Rectangular with an area of about 0.25 hectares with at least two entrances. There are several circular and one rectangular cropmarks and others suggest field boundaries, round huts, pits and ditches. Site partly destroyed by motorway (jarvis).

The site was found to be that of a romano-british farm, and a variety of enclosures, paddocks, etc can be seen. The circular enclosure by the road cutting may be earlier in date. The excavation at the time of the road construction was limited in extent, but produced a good assemblage of pottery to help to date the site. Now protected as an ancient monument. Its condition since 1984 remains stable (griffith).

Numerous enclosures and linear features probably part of a field system are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs taken between 1959 and 1999. Irregular cropmarks of natural and geological origin have confused the pattern and in some cases have masked the archaeological features. These archaeological features have been recorded and described individually as MDV113011, MDV113013, MDV113014, MDV113016, MDV113017 and MDV112018. Cropmarks that formed over field boundaries removed since the Tithe Map have not been recorded. MDV10024 relates to the whole area of cropmarks including those of geological origin.

Further linears may be evident. Bronze Age to Romano-British in date.
