Hospital of st. Gabriel at clyst: bishop walter bonescombe founded within the precincts of his palace a chantry chapel of st. Gabriel in 1276, which was served by 2 priests. The chapel was removed to the village of bishop's clyst in 1311. This site comprised 1 acre and was bounded on the sw by the road to sidmouth and on the other side by the parish of sowton. From being a residence for 2 priests, it was enlarged into a hospital for 12 old and infirm priests. In 1508 bishop oldham appropriated its revenues to the custody of the vicars of exeter cathedral, who were deprived of it in the reign of edward vi. Queen elizabeth i restored it to them in 1585. There was a note among the list of rectors that john allar, who resigned in november 1390, died custos (sic) of the house or chapel of st. Gabriel, clyst bridge.

Site of st. Gabriels chapel and medieval hospital. Unknown (pre 1947)(doe) the left hand end of the present house is roughcast with no windows. At one time it is said that an old chapel projected from this part as a wing. At the front of the present house, and in ruins, is an octagon of thick heavitree stone which may be the base of a bell tower, probably 16th century, and the only part of the present structure that was part of the hospital. The one acre plot occupied by the hospital was owned by the dean and chapter at the time of the tithe map, and was an enclave of farringdon parish (alcock, 1975). Site now occupied by modern houses (dmg).
LANCEFIELD, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV77969.
Referred to as the home of st. Barnabus. Founded by bishop bronescombe (lancefield).
