Full description
Sheldon, L., 1933, Devon Toll-Houses, 301, 305 (Article in Serial). SDV341560.
Sandy Gate Toll House on the Exeter to Lyme Regis road. It is built of good grey stone with dressed stone facings.
Lowe, M. C., 1992, Toll houses of the Exeter Turnpike Trust, 96 (Article in Serial). SDV40109.
A new toll house was built here in 1848. It stood until 1939 when it was demolished as part of a road improvement scheme. A photo in the Western Morning News in October 1936 shows it to be built of stone with part of the upper storey tile hung.

Site visit 8th November 1982. The 2-storey, slate roofed toll house is now cement rendered. It has been divided into 2 dwellings: Nos 38 and 39 Sidmouth Road (citing OSAD).
