The church at pinhoe was probably named after the westcountry saint, st. Pinnock (rowe).

The legend of the mass priest serving pinhoe, helping in the battle against the danes in 1001, (sx99ne/3), suggests that there was a church here in the 11th century (reichel, 1898). An account is given of the danish raid, the battle at pinhoe and the payment by the ecclesiastical commissioners to the vicar of pinhoe of an annual sum of money in perpetuity as a reward for his part of the battle (reichel, 1920-1921).
