HER Number:MDV102090
Name:Possible lynchet or field boundary west of Hartland

Summary

A curvilinear feature is visible in two adjacent fields as an earthwork bank, then as a pale cropmark on aerial photographs taken in April 1946 and July 1946 respectively. It is not visible on any later available photographs and has most likely been levelled by ploughing. It is interpreted as a former field boundary, probably part of the medieval strip field system west of Hartand, which became disused in the second half of the nineteenth century.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011-2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

A linear feature, on the same alignment as the surrounding medieval field system, is visible as an earthwork bank on aerial photographs between 1946 and 1977, and as a cropmark on aerial photographs taken in 1999. In form it resembles an earthwork lynchet or field boundary parallel to the contour at a break of slope. A field boundary is depicted here on the 1844 Tithe map, but not the 1880s-1890s Ordnance Survey mapping. It is therefore interpreted as a former field boundary bank that had gone out of use by the late nineteenth century, probably originating as part of the medieval strip field system west of Hartand.
