HER Number:MDV102092
Name:Quarry pits west of Hartland

Summary

Three dark, roughly semi-circular cropmarks abutting the northern boundary of a field are visible in aerial photographs taken between 1959 and 1977. They are likely to have formed above infilled quarry pits, potentially used for the construction of the adjacent field boundary between 1880 and 1906. Although they are not visible on later aerial photographs, the features may survive and could produce cropmarks in a dry year.

Three dark, roughly semi-circular cropmarks are visible abutting the northern boundary of a field in aerial photographs taken between 1959 and 1977. The grass is paler immediately adjacent to the dark cropmarks, and this could be the result of differential drainage into infilled cut features. In the 1959 aerial photographs, the vegetation adjacent to the dark cropmarks is thicker than the rest of the hedge, perhaps due to greater availability of water in humic material within infilled cut features. A likely explanation for the cropmarks is that they are quarry pits, infilled after the extraction of material for the construction of the adjacent field boundary. This straight field boundary is depicted on the 1904-1906 Ordnance Survey mapping, but not the 1880s-1890s edition, and it is likely that the quarries were in use in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. Although they are not visible on later aerial photographs after 1977, the features may survive and could produce cropmarks in a dry year.
