HER Number:MDV102131
Name:Former field boundaries north-east of Abbotsham

Summary

Former field boundary banks to the north-east of Abbotsham village are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs from 1950. The curvilinear cropmarks fit within and therefore are contemporary with or post-date the surrounding extant field system, a mix of curvilinear boundaries and rectilinear enclosures that are probably medieval in origin. The former field boundaries are depicted on the 1839 tithe map for the parish of Abbotsham, but had probably fallen out of use and been removed prior the publication of the Ordnance Survey 25inch first edition map in circa the 1890s.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011 - 2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

Two former field boundary banks to the north of Abbotsham village are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs from 1946. The curvilnear former boundaries are depicted on the 1839 tithe map for the parish of Abbotsham, but not on the Ordnance Survey 25inch first edition map, supporting the interpretation that they had passed out of use, and possibly removed, by the 1880s. Further field boundaries have been removed since 1946.
The 1839 tihe map illustrates the field boundaries within their surrounding extant field system, which largely comprises curvilinear boundaries that are probably based on medieval strip fields. It is likely the relict boundaries are late medieval or post-medieval in date. Since
The fields in which the cropmarks have been recorded, and their immediate neighbours to the east, have been greatly disturbed by recent development, and the former boundaries are no longer visible.
