Summary

Former field boundary banks to the west of Abbotsham village are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs from 1945 onwards. Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011 - 2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

Former field boundary banks to the west of Abbotsham village are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs from 1945. The curvilnear former boundaries are depicted on the 1839 tithe map for the parish of Abbotsham, but not on the Ordnance Survey 25inch first edition map, supporting the interpretation that they had passed out of use, and possibly removed, by the 1880s.
The curvilinear boundaries fit within the surrounding extant field system as depicted on the tithe map, which largely comprises curvilinear boundaries that are probably based on medieval strip fields. It is likely the relict boundaries are contemporary in date. By 1979 the boundary is visible only as a low earthwork.
