HER Number:MDV102175
Name:Former field boundary south-west of Lighthouse Cross

Summary

A curvilinear bank is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs between 1946 and 1978. A field boundary is shown in this location on the 1844 Tithe map, but not the 1880s-1890s Ordnance Survey mapping. The feature is interpreted as a medieval field boundary that became disused in the second half of the nineteenth century.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011 - 2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

A curvilinear bank is visible as a cropmark approximately 6 metres in width on aerial photographs between 1946 and 1978. A field boundary is shown in this location on the 1844 Tithe map, but not the 1880s-1890s Ordnance Survey mapping, suggesting that the cropmark had formed over the ploughed-out remains of a field boundary that became disused in the second half of the nineteenth century. The surrounding field pattern is characterised as of medieval origin and the curvilinear form of the cropmark supports a medieval date for the bank.
