Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1962 - 1982, SX99NW7 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV342826.

Visited on 27/07/1962. Barrow situated at edge of wood and has been mutilated on south side by ploughing. One of two close together. Condition good, undamaged.
Visited on 09/02/1982. 28 metres diameter and 1.3 metres high.

Has been ploughed. Diameter 30.5 metres, height 1.8 metres.

Visited in February 1980. Barrow overgrown, still standing to considerable height. Not surveyed.

Visited on 09/04/1969. Situated on the southern edge of a long plantation, it is damaged on the south side by ploughing. Diameter 27 metres, height 2 metres.

One of a relatively isolated pair of bowl barrows, 70 metres apart, forming part of the Upton Pyne group. Survives as an earthen mound 30 metres in diameter and 2 metres high. The south-east edge is truncated along the fence line to the arable field beyond. There is no visible or recorded evidence of excavation, although debris from a badger set in the south part confirms a soil/clay outer layer similar to that in nearby excavated barrows.

The remains of a probable barrow of Bronze Age date were visible on images derived from Lidar data as an oval earthwork mound roughly 28 metres across, falling largely within Long Plantation, Brampford Speke. The probable barrow abuts the southern plantation boundary and is probably crossed by it.
The section of earthwork monument that extended beyond the plantation boundary has probably been levelled by ploughing. The condition of the earthwork within the plantation appears to be good.
A similar earthwork monument was visible circa 60 metres to the north-east.
