Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011 - 2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

Narrow ridge and furrow earthworks, probably created for post-medieval or modern agricultural improvement and drainage, are visible as banks and gulleys on aerial photographs dating from the 1940s, centred on circa SS35492226, to the south of Swanton Farm. The earthworks are visible over five fields, arrayed around the head of a small combe, along which runs a spring-fed stream. The spring which feed the stream rises immediately to the west. The ridges appear to be aligned to facilitate drainage into the stream. The affected fields are depicted as rough or unimproved ground on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map of 1880s-1890s, which might support the interpretation that the visible improvements were installed after this date. Little evidence of the earthworks remains visible on aerial photographs taken from 1966 onwards.
