Narrow ridge and furrow earthworks, probably created for post-medieval or modern agricultural improvement and drainage, are visible as earthwork banks on aerial photographs dating from the 1940s to the 1970s, over three fields to the to the north of Spanny Hone, Alwington. The earthworks are orientated roughly north to south, covering the entirety of two roughly rectangular fields, and the eastern edge of an irregularly shaped field immediately to the west. In total, the improvements cover an area of nearly 4.5 hectares. The ridges were probably made to facilitate drainage into a spring-fed stream which flowas northwards along a combe to the north-east. The earthworks appear to have been levelled on aerial photographs taken in 1971, but remain visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs of 1979. They are not visible on the most recent aerial photographs available to the survey and have probably been removed by later improvements.
