Narrow ridge and furrow earthworks, probably created for post-medieval or modern agricultural improvement and drainage, are visible as earthwork banks on aerial photographs dating from the 1940s to the north-east of Horns Cross, Alwington.
The earthworks are orientated roughly north to south, covering an area of nearly 1.4 hectares.
The area of improvement corresponds with an area depicted as rough pasture on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map, published in the 1880s or 1890s, and may therefore post-date it’s publication. The ridges were probably made to facilitate drainage into a spring-fed stream which flows along a combe to the south. The earthworks appear to have been levelled on aerial photographs taken in 1968 and are not visible on the most recent aerial photographs available to the survey.
