An extensive relict strip-field field system of probable medieval date is visible on aerial photographs as numerous roughly parallel curvilinear earthworks covering 20 hectares of steep slope between Gilscott and the coastal cliffs to the north. The majority of the earthworks are aligned roughly north-west to south-east, crossing the contours of the coastal slopes at an oblique angle. Exceptions can be seen to the west of the field system where the earthworks crest a ridge into Peppercombe and change to a roughly south-west to north-east orientation. Further variation in the orientation of the earthworks can be seen towards the north-eastern edge of the visible earthworks, at circa SS 387242.
The strip field boundaries are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards. Some of the earthworks have suffered damage by 1979 and the majority appear to have been almost completely levelled by 1999, with areas of exceptional survival in areas of dense scrub growth around SS385243. Nonetheless, PGA aerial photography of 2002 and Lidar images acquired in 2008 reveal that a small number of boundaries survive as earthworks, particularly towards the north-eastern edge of the field system.
