Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011-2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

A former field boundary of probable medieval date is visible immediately to the north of Cartland as a low curvilinear earthwork bank, approximately 130 metres long, on aerial photographs of 1946. The earthwork corresponds with a field boundary depicted on the tithe map for Alwington made by circa 1837 but is not depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map published by 1890, supporting the interpretation that the field boundary passed out of use between 1837 and 1890. The earthwork remains visible on aerial photographs of 1967 but can not be seen on aerial photographs of 1978 or later.
