Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011-2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

A former field boundary of probable medieval date is visible on aerial photographs from 1946 to 1978 as a low earthwork bank, centred on circa SS39352427. The boundary is not depicted on the tithe map for Alwington of circa 1837 or the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map published by 1890, supporting the interpretation that the field boundary had passed out of use before 1837. Nonetheless, the curvilinear nature of the earthwork and the fact that at its eastern end it appears to form a continuation of an extant curved field boundary, might support the interpretation that this feature is part of the wider landscape character of medieval enclosure based on strip fields.
By 2001 this boundary appears to be reinstated as the southern extent of an newly extended area of non-coniferous woodland, possibly an annexe to Dockham Wood to the north.
