HER Number:MDV102336
Name:Relict field boundary east of Westacott Cliff

Summary

A linear bank is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs between 1946 and 2007. It is interpreted as a relict post-medieval field boundary or lynchet which formed or was constructed at the change of slope. Earthwork remains survive and divide the higher, more scrubby part of the slope from the lower more gently sloping part.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011 - 2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

A bank approximately 2.2 metres wide is visible as a linear earthwork on aerial photographs between 1946 and 2007. It is aligned east to west, along the countour, and is interpreted as a former field boundary, or possibly a lynchet, which formed or was constructed at the change of slope. Its straight form suggests that it is post-medieval in date, although it is not depicted on the 1837 Tithe map, and any formal land division therefore is likely to have ceased prior to the mid-nineteenth century. However a difference in vegetation between the lower, northern, and higher steeper southern sides of the bank is visible on aerial photographs from the 1970s onwards. This suggests that the landuse still differs depending on the steepness of the slope. Earthwork remains are likely to survive.
