Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011 - 2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

Two parallel earthwork banks are visible on aerial photographs of 1971 to the south-east of Chiddlecombe Farm, Alwington. The banks are aligned roughly north-west to south-east, crossing the north-west facing slopes of a combe, to the south-east of a spring-fed stream which flows along the combe. The earthworks do not correspond with any field boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map of the late 19th century or the tithe map for Alwington of 1837. However, they do appear to be aligned upon similarly spaced parallel boundaries depicted on the 1837 tithe map on the north-western side of the stream, and they might be a former continuation of a possible ford or track that was superceded by the current route that curves to the west. The boundaries depicted on the tithe map have themselves been replaced by an orchard by the publication of the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map.
