HER Number:MDV102439
Name:Relict field boundary bank or lynchet north of Buck's Barton

Summary

A linear bank is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs from 1946, and as a possible lynchet on aerial photographs dating to 2007. The earthwork remains of this former field boundary are likely to survive in part and may date to the medieval or perhaps post-medieval period, falling out of use before the late nineteenth century.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011 - 2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

A linear bank, approximately 1 metre in width, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs from 1946. In the 1940s scrub or tree growth is established on the bank, but by the 1970s the bank is visible only as an earthwork within a cultivated field. A sharp break of slope is visible in this location on aerial photographs dating to 2007, and although any bank has apparently been removed or ploughed out it is possible that the break of slope is partly attributable to a build up of ploughsoil against a former boundary. No field boundary is depicted here on the 1880s-1890s Ordnance Survey mapping, and it is likely that the bank is a relict medieval, or perhaps post-medieval, field boundary that went out of use before the late nineteenth century.
