Name:Former field boundary bank south-east of Slade Farm

Summary

A linear bank is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs from 1946 to 1978. It is likely to be a relict medieval or post-medieval field boundary bank that went out of use by the mid nineteenth century. By 2007 the field had been planted with young trees, and it is possible that the earthwork has been levelled.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011 - 2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

A linear bank, approximately 3.5 metres wide and aligned roughly north to south, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs from 1946 to 1978. It is likely to be a relict field boundary bank and is within an area characterised as post-medieval enclosures, although it is sinuous in form and could potentially have a medieval origin. As it is not depicted on the 1838 Tithe map it is likely to have gone out of use by the mid nineteenth century. By 2007 the field had been planted with young trees, and it is possible that the earthwork has been levelled.
