The Battery was opened in 1885 for Royal Navy training, and closed in 1906 due to Royal Navy cuts. It was used in gunnery practice in the First World War and was one of the bases of H.M.S. Appledore in the Second World War. No references given.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011 - 2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

A rectangular building with a curving roof and a possible entranceway at its east end is visible on aerial photographs dating to 1945 and 1946, and it is interpreted as having a modern military function. Its dimensions are consistent with an interpretation as a Nissen hut at approximately 5 metres by 12 metres, and it is likely to have been associated with a Second World War Royal Navy base at Old Battery. It was not visible on aerial photographs taken in 1953 and is likely to have been removed soon after the end of the war.
