HER Number:MDV102556
Name:Possible military marker on Grey Sand Hill

Summary

A square-sectioned post is visible as a structure on aerial photographs taken in December 1944, but had been removed or fallen over by January 1945. No remains are visible on available later aerial photographs and it is likely that the post was a temporary structure, perhaps a marker post, associated with the military training area at Northam.

A square-sectioned post is visible as a structure on aerial photographs taken in December 1944, near the end of the spit. In aerial photographs taken in January 1945 it is visible as a dark structure, but no remains are visible on available later aerial photographs and it is likely that the post was a temporary structure associated with the military training area at Northam, possibly a marker. Alternatively it is possible that it functioned as an anti-invasion obstacle in the early years of the Second World War, although its position below the pebble ridge suggests this is unlikely.

Passmore, A. J., 2013, Northam Burrows FEP Consultation Pro-forma (Report - non-specific). SDV356811.

Nothing is visible at the location given, but this is on top of a north-west to south-east aligned bank forming the centre of the natural spit so would be a good location for a marker post. A single lump of concrete is visible nearby at 245275 131498 embedded within the dunes.

Passmore, A., 2014, Northam Burrows, Northam, Devon: Higher Level Stewardship Scheme Archaeological Survey, 5-6 (Report - Survey). SDV356810.

No remains were visible of the possible marker post.
