Sowden house. An underground passage started in the cliffs at sowden end, used for smuggling. It was still to be seen in 1885. It was reputed to lead to sowden house and ended in an arched doorway in one of the outhouses. In sowden house a small cupboard behind one of the bedroom window shutters was used for hiding lace or silk. Also the barns of sowden farm (sx98se/113), about 200m to sw, were used to hide contraband brandy and tobacco in the 18th century. Smugglers ceased operations about 1845 (scott).
