HER Number:MDV102691
Name:One of two mock pillboxes in Shingle Slack, Braunton Burrows

Training Aid 36 is recorded on plans of the World War II US Assault Training Centre on Braunton Burrows, and a small square structure is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1945 and 1946. This is one of two similar structures in Shingle Slack likely to be mock pillboxes. Debris observed in the vicinity suggests that the structure has been demolished, but some remains may survive within scrub or below-ground.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011 - 2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

A small structure circa 4 metres square is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1945 and 1946. This is one of two similar structures in Shingle Slack and is probably Training Aid 36 as depicted on U.S. Army plans of the Second World War military training area. It is likely to be a mock pillbox. The structure is not visible on later available aerial photographs, but a possible mound or area of dense scrub visible on images derived from Lidar data captured in 2006-2007 and some remains may survive below the surface. Rubble, bitumen and cement have been observed in the vicinity and scattered concrete fragments and pebbles seen on a survey in 2009 suggest that the structure has been at least partially demolished.
