A possible ring ditch of probable prehistoric to Roman date was visible on aerial photographs of the 1960s onwards as a cropmark on gentle northwest facing slopes east of Barton Cross, Huxham, overlooking the Culm Valley.
The cropmark is somewhat diffuse in appearance, perhaps indicative of a buried ditch of variable width and depth, such as one that has been recut or damaged. The cropmark is 2 to 4 metres wide defining a roughly circular shape approximately 25 metres in diameter. A dark cropmark of a ditch extends from the north-eastern quadrant towards the centre of the ring ditch.
A smaller possible ring ditch abuts the south-eastern edge of the larger feature. This cropmark measures circa 1 metre across and defines a circular feature 8 to 9 metres in diameter. It is unclear from the cropmark evidence alone if the two ring ditches are associated.
Many of the aerial photographs consulted by the survey are copies of DAPs held by the Historic England Archive. In some cases these have been recorded as separate sources. This is because variations in the way the prints have been processed could result in images on which archaeological features are visible to a greater or lesser degree.
