The stones coincide with the site of a fort depicted on an Admiralty Chart of 1887.

Late 19th and early 20th century Ordnance Survey maps show boundary stones associated with a battery built adjacent to the coastguard station in 1862. Four large granite stones, believed to have been the boundary stones, were exposed in the sand in 1989 and placed alongside the lifeboat station.
