HER Number:MDV102793
Name:Lynchet or field boundary west of Bidna House

Summary

Three probable lynchets are visible on aerial photographs from 1946, fitting well into the medieval field pattern in this vicinity, and likely to be the earthwork remains of former strip fields. Images derived from Lidar data captured in 2006-2007 confirm that they survive as earthworks.

Three curvilinear earthwork slopes, circa 3 metres in width, are visible on aerial photographs from 1946, separating areas of relatively flat land. Images derived from Lidar data captured in 2006-2007 confirm that they survive as earthworks. They are parallel to extant field boundaries of probable medieval date and are interpreted as the risers of lynchets, demarcating the extent of former medieval strip fields. They are not depicted on late nineteenth century mapping and presumably fell out of use prior to this.
