A small square feature measuring approximately 3.5 metres to a side is visible as a possible earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946, overlooking the shore west of Windy Cove, near Baggy Point. The function of the feature is unknown but it might be related to Baggy Point’s role as Area ‘M’, part of the US Army’s Second World War Assault Training Centre on the North Devon Coast. It is possible the square was part of a 200 square yard area laid out on Baggy point as a target for experimental firing of normally land based artillery from landing craft. This might be supported by the identification of possible shell crafters across Morte Point immediately to the north and west. The square feature is not visible on later aerial photographs available to the survey.
