NMR CITING ANTIQS OF DEVON, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV103011.

The banks of an encampment of no great importance and said to have been of danish origin formerly existed on windmill hill. They are no longer visible, the hill being planted and laid out in walks, with a bowling green (nmr citing antiqs of devon).

NMR CITING OS, Untitled Source (Report - Survey). SDV103012.

Vis=23/10/1979 (os)there is nothing on the os 3" drawing of 1801 at windmill hill (not named) to identify these earthworks. The only grounds laid out with ornamental walks are those of farringdon house (sy017919). The hill may have been the encampment of lord russell's army in 1549 during the western rebellion and the scene of a battle (nmr citing os).

Griffith, F. M., Untitled Source (Report - Survey). SDV677.

Vis=5/10/1988 (griffith) this appears to be an entirely natural mound. A sub-rectangular mark is visible in the ap as suggested above, but may just mark the break of slope of this fairly abrupt rise. It certainly doesn't make sense as a defensive feature (griffith).

Timms, S. C., 1978, Remains of Earthwork on Windmill Hill (Worksheet). SDV103015.

nothing visible on ground. Possible site of 'ailmundsburga' mentioned in 13th century torre abbey charter (citing brighouse).
