Cropmarks of former field boundaries of probable medieval date are visible on aerial photographs of the 1990s, to the north of Stapleton Farm. The cropmarks fall within an area characterised as Barton Fields; relatively large, regular enclosures probably laid out between C15th-C18th but with some curving boundaries possibly following earlier divisions in the pre-existing medieval fields. A straight, roughly east to west boundary centred at circa SS55644412 crosses the contours of the slope and appears to be aligned on the corners of extant field boundaries. It is not depicted on the 1840 tithe map for Berrynarbor and might be evidence of an earlier boundary based on strip fields. The curvilinear cropmarks centred at circa SS557439 clearly also belong to a system of enclosure predating the regular field boundaries depicted on the 1840 tithe map for Berrynarbor. These cropmarks follow the contours of the slope and might also be evidence of strip fields of medieval date but could also be interpreted as evidence of terracing or lynchets.
