HER Number:MDV103212
Name:Possible Bowl Barrow, Berry Down

Summary

A low mound visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1955 on the north facing slopes of Berry Down might be the remains of a round barrow of Bronze Age date. Bowl barrows of similar size have been recorded forming a barrow cemetery further south on the higher slopes of Berry Down. This earthwork could form an outlier of this cemetery.

A roughly circular low earthwork mound circa 22 metres in diameter is visible on aerial photographs of July November 1955 on the north facing slopes of Berry Down. The earthwork has been interpreted as possible evidence of a Bowl Barrow of Bronze Age date. Bowl barrows of similar and larger size have been recorded forming a barrow cemetery further to the south on the higher slopes of Berry Down. This earthwork could be an outlier of this cemetery, possibly on a false crest as the Down is approached from the combe to the north. The earthwork is not visible on any later aerial photographs available to the survey and might have been levelled by modern agricultural improvements.
