James, T., 26/10/2012, Land at Plumb Park, Exmouth, East Devon (Report - Assessment). SDV350713.

This assessment has only researched and documented the known archaeological, cartographic and
documentary resources and as a consequence has demonstrated that the archaeological potential
within the proposed application area is currently limited to field names, which could be indicative
of ironworking activities, the presence of earthworks (Slagbury) and land near a boundary
mound (Ball Hill). While the latter may be of note given the relatively close proximity of
the Anglo Saxon charter boundary of the Littleham estate, its significance is somewhat diminished by the presence of another field with the same name, to the northwest of Prattshayes. The ‘Slag’ element of Slagbury could simply be reference to land where waste (slag) was deposited as opposed to a reference to an iron production site. Early ironworking sites tend to be located near local supplies of iron ore (which are currently absent from this area). They require a readily available supply of charcoal and a source of water. Other field names suggest that vines and plum trees may once have grown within the site on the west and south facing slopes of Donkey Hill.
