NMR CITING LYSONS, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV102838.

There was formerly a chapel dedicated to st saviour and the town is said to have once had a district of this name. Near this chapel was a hermitage (nmr citing lysons).

Bishops court was approached by a bridge over the river, where bishop grandisson erected a chapel before 1355, dedicated to the holy saviour (nmr citing dalton).

Bishop grandisson purchased the manor of ottery st mary in 1335 (nmr citing cornish).

Vis=10/11/1953 (os) tm gives no indication of the site of st saviour's chapel and hermitage. Its date of erection and dedication must lie between 1335 and 1355, but on which side of st saviour's bridge the building was constructed is unknown. The local vicar could give no information upon this matter (nmr citing os).

It is assumed that the chapel may have been at one end of bridge, a not uncommon medieval practice and the approximate siting is therefore placed at the centre of the present st saviour's bridge, where the river is most conveniently crossed (nmr).

Recorded in 1377 (see cresswell). References in 1426 + 1438 suggest that it was in need of repair. Precise location unknown, but likely to have been on e bank and close to end of bridge sy09ne/11/1 (weddell).
