Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The banks do not correspond to any features depicted on the map.

A fragmentary ordered, rectilinear linear system, 'field' size on average 222m by 50m. Visible as cropmark and earthwork banks and interpreted as the relict field boundaries of a medieval or later field system. Mapped from aerial photographs taken in 1978 and 1946.

Knight, S., 2012, Backlog Input Element of the North Devon Coast AONB National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV350734.

The banks do not correspond to any features depicted on the Tithe map and their use therefore probably predates the mid nineteenth century.

Hegarty, C., Houghton, E., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2020-2021, Tamar/Lidar; A Single Source Approach to Landscape Survey and Socially Distanced Community Archaeology Area 2 (Culture Recovery Fund project) (Interpretation). SDV364011.

Two linear banks, one orientated east-west and one orientated north-south, are visible as subtle earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013. The earthworks are situated on a west facing slope to the east of Upcott Cross and do not correspond with any features depicted on historic maps, however the north-south orientated bank aligns with a field boundary to the immediate north. The historic landscape is characterised as rough ground and is depicted as unimproved or rough ground from the late 19th to the mid-late 20th century.
The earthwork banks are interpreted as medieval to post-medieval field boundaries that passed out of use by circa 1840. The banks were transcribed as part of the 2020-2021 Tamar/Lidar project.
