Evidence for up to eight bomb craters of Second World War date is visible as earthwork pits on aerial photographs of the 1940s, distributed across the ridge of higher ground between Worswell Barton and Gapmouth Rock, Newton and Noss parish. Two possible craters are visible in a cultivated field centred approximately at circa SX530471 and a single outlying crater can be seen at circa SX533472. Three smaller pits centred at circa SX531470 might be evidence of unexploded ordnance and two further small craters centred at circa SX527470 might be of smaller size due to falling on coastal heath. The craters are probably associated with the operation of an ‘N’ series bombing decoy at Worswell, to the north and west. The craters are not visible on later aerial photographs and have probably all been infilled and levelled.
