As with most traditional market places, that at Bideford was well supplied with pubs. In the north-west corner of the area the Farmers’ Arms, the Joiners’ Arms, the Angel Inn and the Peacock Inn lay more or less side by side in the 19th century. Of these only the Joiners’ Arms continues to function. On a town map of 1842, the Joiners’ Arms is shown as a long narrow building on a north-south axis, extending southwards to adjoin the Farmers’ Arms.
